To keep this car related, have something nice. Below is something that has been bothering me this last few months, feel free to tell me how you feel about it/ how I am wrong.
The Japanese have an unspoken rule about how to behave in public, in a very simple and quite idiotic generalization, they try their best not to bother others around them / create uncomfortable situations.
I have spent my entire life as customer trying to avoid weird situations that can cause delays, here are a few examples:
Something from my take-out order arrived wrong/missing. That’s fine how it is, I won’t go out of my way to call them and complain about it.
One of my credit/debit cards didn’t work for some unknown reason. That’s fine, I’ll use another one.
A dish in a restaurant menu has an ingredient I don’t like/ am allergic to. I’ll just order something else.
That doesn’t mean I won’t complain if someone is trying to rip me of, purposely trying to bother me, etc. But most situations are either out of my control or just not worth bothering someone else about.
I just don’t understand the mentality of people who get angry or complain when a restaurant won’t alter a dish to their every need, or people who refuse to pay if there is some minor problem with the credit card machine. The I AM THE CUSTOMER I AM ALWAYS RIGHT mentality is something that makes no sense to me, delaying everyone around you and publicly shaming yourself just to get 5 bucks back because “THIS IS TOO SPICY I WON’T PAY”.
Fuck these people, someone was arguing with the poor 16 year old cashier at the supermarket today over 50 cents on tomato prices while I waited in the queue. WHY?

I agree. A couple of months ago, a man got irrate with an employee because the employer knocked over one of his drinks. The reason he knocked it over was because the asshole customer decided to bring his buggy full of groceries to the lawn and garden section. They don’t have a conveyor counter there(or whatever it’s called). Asshole keeps shoving stuff on the counter, so the employee was having to sit stuff wherever he could. He asked to see the manager. I announced my cashier at an almost yell “ I didn’t know this was the grocery line”. That made her day. Then as I was leaving I told the dude he was a fucking asshole, then I left.
It felt amazing.

I’m the exact same way and I have no idea where I got it from. My mom is quiet but in a kindof rude way, and my dad is very loud. The only way I’ll go back for a screwed up order is if the soda is all carbonated water and I’m still in the lot. And I always say “I don’t mean to be that guy but...”

Hm. I thought we only dealt with that in the States. I'm not Japanese but I would much rather endure a minor inconvenience than cause a scene over petty things.

Got a few for you.
This just happened to my mom at the grocery store. Guy had a 10 lb bag of ice. He asked the cashier to weigh it. She replied 9.4 pounds. Guy asked to speak to a manager and said, “can you find me a bag that’s actually 10 pounds?” Then turned to my mom and said, “This is going to take a while”
I had a guy in the diner I was a server in argue over 1 dollar and 25 cents. Because he misread the menu and didn’t realize he ordered the ultimate combo (3 eggs, potatoes, meat, and toast for $7.50) instead of the deluxe (3 eggs, potatoes, and toast for $6.25)
The guy made a scene yelling in the middle of a busy restaurant. We stood there for 5 minutes going back forth before I finally lost it and told him, “I’m not paying for your lack of Reading comprehension” he then threw some cash on the table and left.
I hate everyone.

because they are people who have practically never in their life been told “no.” They’re used to getting their way.
or, they’re just sociopaths.
I AM THE CUSTOMER I AM ALWAYS RIGHT
“The customer is always right” is the most misunderstood idiom in existence, I think. What it really means is “If you don’t pay attention to what your customers are looking for, you won’t succeed in your business.” It literally means “know what your market wants.” Unfortunately, the average rando thinks it means “I’m your customer and you will kiss my ass.”

I know what you mean. I too try not to bother people with problems I encounter, unless I can’t solve them myself.
And indeed complaining customers are terrible, I’am been filling in for a Co-worker who does customerservice the past week and next week. The amount of customers seeking compensation for problems that aren’t even caused by us, but by for instance a transporter or a manufacturer, is way too high. As is the amount of people not adhering to our terms and conditions, and thus wanting to return products outside our 2 week window, or claim damage outside the 48 hour window.

90% of the time a confrontation is not necessary yet people do it anyway. Sometimes it’s because people feel like they are being screwed or because they’re entitled. It’s hard to draw the line.

I too try to avoid causing any kind of scene, if something minor is messed up its really no big deal, definitely not worth wasting time on. I used to work in customer service, and I couldn’t believe the entitlement of people. Even worse, the place I worked at absolutely pandered to these assholes. Don’t like the price? Repeat “too expensive” until the employee gives in, calls a manager and they authorize a discount. Trying to return something without a receipt 2 years later? No problem, just ask to see a manager and they’ll roll over and give you a free refund, and make the cashier look like the bad guy for initially saying “no sorry, that’s not store policy”. I'm so glad I don't work there anymore.....

People are assholes.
A few weeks ago I was in the self checkout lane at the grocery store and some old bag in the express lane next to me got pissy with the HS girl running the register to the point where the girl was in tears. She kept going this isn’t your fault but they shouldn’t have you working on a busy Saturday. And she just kept repeating it. She finally paid and as she started to leave she stopped and kept bringing up that she felt the girl shouldn’t be working busy Saturdays. Finally I had enough and loudly told the lady to just get out already. She kept trying to justify and I flat out looked at her and loudly said the poor girl is just trying to earn her damn paycheck and shouldn’t have to deal with customers like you. And as she was walked passed me I was basically yelling that you bet if that was your ass behind the register you wouldn’t want to be yelled at like you just did to her. I’m not sure what the girl screwed up or if it was just the old bag being a idiot, but she had no right to treat the cashier that way.
Shit like that just pisses me off to now end. If someone messes up an order or something I’ll go back to them to get it fixed if I feel like it but try to be as understanding and polite as possible.

The other day I was at a restaurant that had a lamb sandwich special that came with mushrooms, peppers, and onions mixed in. It sounded good, but I don’t really like mushrooms, so I decided to ask if I could get it without mushrooms. If the answer was no, I had something else picked out. I don’t get why people fight over altering a dish. Sometimes things are prepped already, and it can’t be done - pick something else! Anyway, the waitress said I could get it without mushrooms. You know where this is going - it arrived with mushrooms. And I ate it without complaining. And I left a decent tip. One of the guys I was out with said I should send it back. When I told my wife later that night, she said I should’ve sent it back or asked for a discount. I just don’t get it. Maybe if it was completely the wrong dish I’d send it back, but orherwise why make a scene? One time I somehow ended up with salmon instead of chicken. I’m not sure thie that mix up happened but I just ate it and it was pretty good. I also once had a chain deli place “toast” my sandwich to the point the bread was completely black. I paid for it, threw it in the trash, walked out the door and never went back there. I’m sure some people would have yelled at them. Finally, the other day I totally fucked up an order at In-n-Out Burger and got something my daughter something that she is allergic too. I thought it was their fault, but I almost didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to make a scene or slow them down by having to fix it. But She couldn’t eat it, so I asked what happened so quietly they had to ask me to speak up. When they explained that I screwed up, I offered to pay to have it redone, but they wouldn’t let me and just fixed another burger which was pretty awesome.
TL; DR. You are right. I think most people are probably more like you than not. But the few that do complain loudly are the most noticeable.
And don’t even get me started on people who argue about less than $1 at the grocery store when there is a line behind them... Go talk to the manager later if it is such a big deal!

The other day a guy who looked pretty down on his luck was taking forever to count out a pocket full of nickels and dimes to pay for a black coffee in front of me in line at Starbucks and I just cut in and paid for it. I wish I could say I was doing it solely to help a less fortunate guy out, but mostly I was just sick of waiting.
